SMALL COMMUNITY GRANT APPLICATIONS - FEBRUARY 2020

Report of the Corporate Director (Housing and Communities) detailing the applications for Small Community Grants.

Minutes:

Members received a report of the Corporate Director (Housing and Communities) which detailed the applications that had been received for Small Community Grants.

 

The report noted that Small Community Grants were limited to a maximum of £2,000 per application.  There was £44,000 in total available during the financial year 2019/20 to be awarded through the Small Community Grants of which £18,766.90 had already been awarded this financial year and this left £25,233.10 to be awarded.

 

In total £24,313 had been applied for in this round of funding and there had been 14 applications.

 

The Council looked to support projects which helped achieve at least one of the following priority areas: maintain a safe and healthy community, protect and enhance the environment, meet the borough’s housing needs, help build a strong local economy, engage with our communities and provide value for money.

 

Members noted that any leftover funds following allocation would be put into the fund for the Queens Sapphire Jubilee Awards – February 2020.

 

Activating ADHD

 

Activating ADHD had applied for a grant of £1966 for setting up costs, general running costs of the adult service, marketing materials and equipment and buying in outside services such as expert speakers.

 

The Board felt that this was a strong application which would provide a new important service for the borough.

 

AGREED a grant of £1966.

 

Crusaders Skater Hockey Club

 

Crusaders Skater Hockey Club had applied for a grant of £2000 for extra skates and pads, hall hire costs, advertising costs and part funding for coaching qualifications, safeguarding and first aid training.

 

The Board felt that the free fun skate sessions would be a great activity for young people to attend during school holidays. It would offer more variety in the choice of activities locally available and encourage young people to get fit and active.

 

AGREED a grant of £2000.

 

Cuffley Hall

 

Cuffley Hall had applied for a grant of £1000 for the cost of replacing the small hall floor and corridor areas.

 

The Board appreciated the diverse activities Cuffley Hall provided for a range of different age groups. The Board agreed that long term maintenance should ideally be the responsibility of Cuffley Hall and paid from their own reserves and that Cuffley Hall could review their charging structure to do so.

 

AGREED a grant of £1000.

 

 

Friends of St. Mary’s

 

Friends of St.Mary’s had applied for a grant of £2000 to provide a one off event in the village of Essendon to celebrate the 75th Anniversary of VE day.

 

The Board approved of this community event that would raise awareness and educate young people on World War Two.

 

AGREED a grant of £2000.

 

Lemsford Football Club

 

Lemsford Football Club had applied for a grant of £1000 to pay for coaching courses, First Aid and Safeguarding courses, training equipment and floodlight training.

 

The Chairman agreed to consider this application even though this application was the second within 24 months.

The Board would remind the club that any future applications would need to be typed to be considered unless they were informed of a reason why this would not be possible.

 

AGREED a grant of £1000.

 

Music24

 

Music24 had applied for a grant of £2000 for room hire, music therapist fee and publicity.

 

The Board felt that this was a very worthwhile project and wholeheartedly supported it. There appeared to be some discrepancy in the figures on the application form but the Board would donate to the project the full amount of funding asked. The Board would request clarification on the figures and a breakdown of what the funding donation was spent on.

 

AGREED a grant of £2000.

 

Old Hatfield Ladies Running Club

 

Old Hatfield Ladies Running Club had applied for a grant of £2000 to provide funding for running sessions over the next 12 months.

 

The Board commented that the ladies running club met a specific need and particularly appreciated that participants were encouraged to lift share, walk, run, jog or cycle to meeting places to reduce traffic.

 

AGREED a grant of £2000.

 

Peartree Wellbeing Project

 

Peartree Wellbeing Project had applied for a grant of £2000 to deliver several healthy activities including badminton, health walks and family sports.

 

AGREED a grant of £2000 subject to clarification that the Committee Management members were not being paid £15 per hour from the funding.

 

 

SPACE

 

Space had applied for a grant of £2000 to run the Sleep Tight course.

 

The Board felt that the project was filling an area of need in the community.

 

AGREED a grant of £2000.

 

Welwyn Garden City Army Cadet Force

 

Welwyn Garden City Army Cadet Force had applied for a grant of £500 to purchase kit.

 

The Board felt that this was a good organisation for young people.

 

AGREED a grant of £500.

 

Welwyn Harmony Chorus

 

Welwyn Harmony Chorus had applied for a grant of £1947 to pay for equipment to enable the group to recruit more members.

 

The Board commented on the benefits of the project, particularly for those with dementia.

 

AGREED a grant of £1947.

 

Welwyn Hatfield Women’s Refuge

 

Welwyn Hatfield Women’s Refuge had applied for a grant of £1900 for the provision of training and external clinical supervision for the Outreach and Resettlement Worker.

 

The Board agreed that the Women’s Refuge provided a vital service and that they appreciated the work that they did.

 

AGREED a grant of £1900.

 

Welwyn Warriors Lacrosse Club

 

The Welwyn Warriors Lacrosse Club had applied for a grant of £2000 to pay for a qualified coach and equipment.

 

The Board agreed that this project offered a further choice in sporting activities for young people and exposed them to a different sport.

 

AGREED a grant of £2000.

 

Welwyn Wheelers

 

Welwyn Wheelers had applied for a grant of £2000 to support the enhancement and expansion of the existing cyclo-cross track.

 

Normally the Board would expect a project to have over 50% membership from the local area but acknowledged that Welwyn Wheelers was a centre of excellence and that it had a regional pull.

 

AGREED a grant of £2000.
